Sustainability is at the heart of all that we do here at Corazonas. The words EARTH and HEART share more than just 5 letters – Earth Healthy is our corporate initiative to live and work in a manner that minimizes the impact on our environments.
Our team at Corazonas is passionately committed to putting our whole heart into a sustainable, healthy future for the earth we all share. Please read on below for the ways we have incorporated green practices into our company since our founding in 2006.
Our Corazonas Commitment
- Office recycling programs:
- Print all marketing collateral on recycled materials
- Purchase recycled office and kitchen supplies
- Reuse and recycle printer cartridges, cardboard, plastic and paper (after printing on both sides)
- We cut our paper consumption by 30% this past year!
- Utilize LEED certified and Green Seal standards for office cleaning supplies & cleaning methods
- 64% of employees telecommute at least 1 day/week
- 14% of employees carpool
- 14% of employees commute using hybrid vehicles
- 7% of employees use public transportation
- Office equipped with motion-sensitive lighting, energy-saving CFL bulbs and energy-efficient central AC/heat
- Office utilizes water filtration system
Product and Packaging
Raw Materials
- Corn, oats, oil, and seasonings shipped in bulk and stored in silos or recycled packaging
- Potatoes irrigated by river or rain water and shipped directly from farm in bulk
- Potato scraps used for livestock feed and used oil converted to biofuel
Packaging
- Bags do not include paper layer, eliminating impact on forests
- Absolute minimum amount of packaging used, only enough to ensure product is delivered safely and intact
- Larger fill ratio than competitors to conserve materials (our 7oz bag is smaller than competitors’ 5oz bag)
- Corrugate cases are recycled/biodegradable and ink comes from earth-friendly renewable resources
- All head space removed from cases to maximize pallet configuration and increase transport efficiency
- Corrugate supplier plants trees to offset use and is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative of SFI (http://www.sfiprogram.org/).

For 2008, Corazonas was one of six companies awarded the Green Supply Chain Certificate by freight logistics company, CaseStack, for shipping over 40% of the time with CaseStack certified “Green Carriers”!
Other ways we keep Mother Earth in mind during our manufacturing and transportation processes include:
- Co-packers maintain efficient production schedules to minimize energy usage and limit waste while maximizing output
- Warehouse facility utilizes motion-sensitive lighting, ambient skylights and energy efficient fans
- Manufacturing facilities located on both coasts to reduce transit distances, emissions and fuel resulting in less environmental impact
- Rail transportation used when possible to optimize fuel efficiency
Consumer Tips
- When printing documents, use both sides of the paper before recycling – save trees and money!
- If you always throw receipts away, tell the cashier ahead of time that you don’t need a receipt
- Switch to warm water when washing clothes. Switching from hot water to warm water can cut your energy use per load in half!
- Clean your dryer lint screen and don’t overload the dryer. In doing so, you can save up to 5% on your electricity bill – a potential energy-equivalent savings of 350 million gallons of gasoline per year if everyone did this! And you can add dryer lint to your compost as well!
- For every 30 seconds you shorten your shower, you’ll save up to 4 gallons of water
- Wrap presents using the comic section of the newspaper when you’re done reading. Or look for articles that would interest the gift recipient and use those to wrap the gift
- Reuse ribbon & bows – when you receive a gift, save the bow or ribbon and reuse on the next gift you give
- Switch to a laptop computer instead of a desktop. A laptop uses 90% less energy and generates less heat than a desktop!
